[edit] The Green Knight
Abel is one of the three cavaliers recruited during the prologue of Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon. He is a loyal and brave fighter who remains with Marth through the entire story. Abel is a true patriot, as emphasized by his death quote "Long...live...Altea!" He is recruited carrying an Iron Sword and a Javelin. This is the first long-distance weapon you receive in the game.
[edit] Strengths and Talents
Abel is one of the three default Cavaliers you get in the prologue, and is overall quite good. Though Frey has better all around stats, he's still got great overall stats, and is a keeper throughout the game. He, Cain and Frey all have roughly equal stats, but Abel's luck is what brings him down. His luck growth is almost less than half of Frey's and quite a bit less than Cain's, which makes his evasion rate kind of crappy overall. His HP growth is also the lowest of the group, though it's still above average, so it's nothing to really stress over. However, Abel also has the best strength growth of the three, with a 40% growth rate, making him a good damage dealer early on in the game, and throughout the game. Once he becomes a paladin though, he becomes much better and lowers the gap between him and Frey. When you're in a hard playthrough and Frey doesn't exist, Abel is definitely the best Cavalier overall, beating out Hardin and Cain by quite a bit.

[edit] The Abel Archetype
Abel is the first in the Abel archetype (its counterpart is the Cain archetype) of the Fire Emblem games. Cains have red armor while Abels wear green. These characters are usually cavaliers recruited towards the beginning of the game. One will usually excel in attack and defense while falling somewhat short in speed and skill; the other will excel in speed and skill while being relatively weak offensively.
