Cord is one of the group given to Marth as bodyguards after Marth and his knights save the island of Talys from invading pirates. His fellows are Ogma, Barst, and Bord. The entire group remains faithful to both Marth and Princess Caeda for the duration of the game. Cord is deeply loyal to his captain and his homeland.

Cord is a mediocre character, probably the worst of the group Marth receives from the king of Talys. His main problem is his pathetic skill growth, which prevents him from hitting many characters and negates his good Speed growth. He is the opposite of Bord, who is mediocre because of his terrible speed and excellent skill. Both are usually considered inferior to Barst and often go unused.
