Three years ago, Crimea freed itself from Daein tyranny. Its nobles used that freedom to berate the queen and scrabble for power. Disgusted with their greed and arrogance, Ike and the Greil Mercenaries left the court behind and returned to work. Thanks to their efforts and to Queen Elincia's even-handed rule, Crimea has avoided a bloody civil war. Before departing the capital once again, Ike receives disquieting news from Queen Elincia. The Black Knight, the man who murdered Ike's father, has once again been seen in Daein. The queen's words hang heavy over Ike as he leads the mercenary group back to their headquarters.

When the Greil Mercenaries return home for the first time in what feels like ages, Ike is greeted by old war friend and laguz ally, Ranulf, a sub-commander of Gallia and direct general to Skrimir, Gallia's king-to-be. Ranulf gets to the point and requests the Greil Mercenaries help in a newly formed war between Begnion and the Laguz Alliance (Kilvas, Gallia, and Pheonicis). Ranulf reports that Rafiel, the eldest Heron Royal Family sibling who was until now thought to be dead, arrived in Gallia bearing the news that Begnion committed the acts of the Serene's Massacre. The senators killed their apostle and blamed the Herons for the death. Until this point it was thought that King Ashnard was behind the massacre. To further prove their disinterest in the laguz, the Senators murdered a Laguz Alliance messenger sent to request examination of Rafiel's case. Tibarn specifically grows outraged because of the Senators doing behind the massacre and demands that the Laguz Alliance bring war to Begnion's doorstep and over power them.

Ranulf, having experience with war, is first to understand that Gallia's brute strength won't stop Begnion's magic and tactical prowess, however, and decides to hire the Greil Mercenaries to help them in those areas.
